Forty years ago you might have found your first gig and then stayed there for your entire career, but times are changing and we’ve started to see stints of two to four years become much more common, SJS finds
For gen-z, the average time spent in a job is just two years, while for millennials we’re looking at about four.
There are some huge silver linings to this change. Yes, it presents challenges, but also opportunities.
We’re seeing candidates coming through who have incredible variety in their experience. That’s because they’ve been open to new opportunities when they come, and less concerned about ticking off the time required in a role before moving on.
However, just because it’s normal for your team to move on after a few years doesn’t mean we can’t have a good punt at keeping your them around for a little longer. Here are a few tips that’ll have them dodging recruiters calls and sticking with you instead:
- Give opportunities for growth and development while they’re with you so their wandering eyes don’t look for it elsewhere.
- Purpose is key. Gen Z is driven by wanting to make a meaningful impact on this floating rock we call earth. Help them see how their work is making a difference.
- Encourage work-life balance. If your team need an extra 5 minutes on their lunch break to squeeze in some pilates, we’re all for it. They’ll thank you for it!
- Check-in and give feedback. Often. Praise is every Gen Z and Millenial’s love language. Plus we all love constructive feedback so we can improve. Book in that one-to-one!
So what should we expect in 2023?
The job market is hot right now and plenty of people are jumping on the chance to seek a new challenge.
We’re expecting to see the average tenure continue to sit within the two to four year range. Yes, that means you might lose a few people. But that also means more fresh and experienced staff for your team.
