Car crashes into Tauranga council building

A car has crashed into the Tauranga City Council building on Devonport Rd.

A black sedan hit one of the outside beams of the near-new $45 million building.

Police said the incident happened at about 1pm and there were no reported injuries.

A small crowd gathered outside the building shortly afterwards.

The car was on the footpath, up against the building. It has damage to its front bumper.

A piece of metal on a beam of the building appeared damaged and was removed by two men.

Witnesses at the scene said they understood the crash was accidental.

Officials at the scene would not comment.

Council health, safety and wellbeing manager Tracy Pedersen told NZME a car accidentally drove into the building.

Pedersen confirmed no one was injured.

"The damage to the building is currently being assessed. At this stage, it appears to be superficial and there are no known concerns for the safety of the building.
